Fishing Talk / Batteries
« on: February 13, 2022, 03:23:09 PM »
I’ve been looking at batteries for my little boat and since the motor has an electric start I was going to get a proper one and also run some electronics off it.

I’ve decided I do not want a lead acid battery and going with LifePo or lithium ion. Although more expensive they’re 1/3 the weight in most cases and have longer life. I really want to get my hands on one before I buy it but can’t find them anywhere. West marine, bass pro (they had one Lithium ion battery), batteries bulbs +, wall mart, all don’t have them. So it looks like I might just have to order it from Amazon.

Any recommendations?

Right now I’m looking at this 12.8v 100ah lifePo4 on Amazon

Saltwater Personal Craft Fishing Reports / Looking for bait
« on: February 13, 2022, 09:16:33 AM »
Did just over 20 miles round trip and caught one mackerel and a Mylar balloon.
Not for lack of bait in the area though. Lots of signs of life but it seems all the Mack’s are tiny and the only one I caught was snagged on my sabiki and about 6” long. The wind picked up a little and I was practicing getting my boat into drift positions in front of bait schools when we saw dolphins. From there it was over. We traveled with them from oside to Carlsbad and then hit the canyon and trolled some lures for nothing. Saw what looked like a small flying fish that skipped the water for a good 30 ft but I couldn’t tell as it was right into the sun and 5-6 inches long.
Water is really clean and looks promising for the next coming weeks.
Put together a little video:

Fishing Talk / Inflatable test run
« on: February 06, 2022, 10:04:36 PM »
Got my tohatsu 9.8 working (long story) and took the Saturn out for a test run. We were over 3 miles off shore in a matter of no time looking for dolphins and whales. Decided to let her rip and do some maneuver tests on the way in. Pretty happy with it.

Fishing Talk / Bounce balling
« on: June 10, 2021, 08:11:40 AM »
Anyone here use the bounce ball? I’ve been running it with a 4” big hammer, hoochie skirt over it, 1lb ball and 5-6” flasher.

I feel like the flasher is deterring bites. I haven’t ran it without or side by side without but I also haven’t even got a bass to hit it.

Been trolling in 10-15ft outside the surf up to 60ft

Saltwater Personal Craft Fishing Reports / Looking for blue water
« on: June 02, 2021, 08:42:03 AM »
Launched out of oside with about 40lbs of chum and my heart set on at least seeing a mako. Cruised to cbad canyon and the water was dark green but 65-66 degrees so still promising. Headed out about 5 miles to find the blue water break and it just wasn’t in sight. Figured since we’ve raised them there in the past with dark water it might be worth a shot so I set the chum anyways and flylined some live macks.
Drifted almost 4 hourse before the chum was gone and I was about 2 miles off the beach then headed for the surf zone. Found bait real quick, pinned on a big mackerel and as I was letting it swim out in frees pool it took off at about 50mph.... put the reel in gear, came tight and a thresher put on an aerial show for me. Probably took 8 mins to get to the boat and I released her.

Saltwater Personal Craft Fishing Reports / BoYak fishing
« on: May 27, 2021, 12:23:32 PM »
Been taking the Saturn BoYak out (they call them KaBoats but BoYak sounds better) and just getting a feel for it. The Threshers are inshore and biting from SD to Malibu right now and all you need to do is find the bait and pin one on. Took me 3 tries to figure out what they wanted (usually smaller baits, smaller hooks) but in 5 trips i got 4 bites and two T’s to the boat. Kept one for the grill.

Now that I’ve got them out of my system I’m going to chase some yellowtail and figure out a support rail so I can stand and toss irons and poppers, although I’ve never caught a yellow that way it might be beneficial to have.

If you’re having a hard time finding bait look for the current breaks close to
Shore. Been finding the bigger Macks just outside the surf and micro Mack’s further out but I hear they’re spotty at the piers.

Classifieds / Tarpon16
« on: June 04, 2020, 12:25:21 PM »
I just got this tarpon 16 around January, it’s well used but still in good shape overall. Needs a new front and side handle and probably just replace all the straps. I was slowly modifying it and turning it into an offshore rig but wasn’t able to get out and test it fully loaded. Turns out I’m overweight. Me being 275lbs and adding gear isn’t working out the best.

I don’t have any pics to post (through imgr etc) but I can text some or you can check out my IG page , @little_blue_boat_adventures to see some.

Kayak, bed extender and I’ll throw in a gaff for $350. I bought a brand new HD seat and paddle that I was planning on keeping for the next kayak but I’m not sure what or when that will be so for $100 more you can have those.

Would only recommend the max user weight to be around 225.

Fishing Talk / Lost my hat
« on: June 04, 2020, 11:55:58 AM »
Launched my kayak out of Carlsbad yesterday and lost my Team Rainshadow hat along with my sunglasses when going through a wave. Didn’t realize it until I was outside the break.

So if anyone comes across a snap back rainshadow hat keep me in mind

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / LA county
« on: February 17, 2020, 05:53:32 PM »
Went north this weekend and looked at some water, it’s just as wet up there as down here. Soaked some baits and caught a male soupfin in the 65” range on a piece of mackerel. Didn’t fight very hard for its size. Good initial run then thought I had a medium ray.

Good to be out and get the lines wet. Baits been scarce so I filled my bucket at Marina del ray bait dock along the way.

Sighted in north SD last night. Very approachable creature, didn’t seem to be phased by all the human traffic in the area.

Saltwater Personal Craft Fishing Reports / Kayak fishing
« on: June 16, 2019, 09:18:00 PM »
Went Saturday and set a chum slick about 4.5 miles out. Drifted towards land about 1mph.

Raised one pelagic Ray  and 3 makos. Landed one baby mako and the other two took off (two babies and one in the 80lb range that might have gone home)

Sunday went on a 6 miles round trip paddle where the threshers were holding Friday and Saturday. Water was really dirty and bait was scarce. Amazing how conditions change over night.

One hit that made the clicker sound but no hookups and no teeth marks on the bait. (Tail slap or something ran into the line).

Going for mako at night next time. Not sure if I’ll launch at midnight or before sunset. One 4 gallon bucket of chum seems to last about 4 hours.... maybe I’ll haul out two and some extra meat.
