Ive never done any offshore fishing, so im pretty amazed that they are that vicious... Sawing through 350lb cable is impressive! At least you got to battle it, and even see it.  So much better than no bites or not even getting to see it imo....

Just a SNGF story from yesterday.  I was out Wahoo fishing when I saw birds crashing and shot over to check it out.  In 600' of water, there was a sea lion tossing around a shovelnose trying to eat it.  Not the typical location or place that you would expect to find or see that.

With that, I would take a Shovelnose as my days and nights have been filled with goose eggs!  Glad you got something!

I can take you to my super secret shovel-nose spot if you want;)
Cool story, i thought they were exclusively surf habitat critters...

Decide on a purchase yet Mr.paddy?

Im still waiting for the Great Latemeria's input before I can make a decision😝😝
Probably gonna go with the Battallion 25/50.. You got me convinced on the bigger rod, plus I can get a smokin deal on it.  Gonna wait til Black Friday/cyber Monday and see if i can get an even better deal.

How do they get 5+lb baits out? Cast them?

Ive yet to see a rod rated 80 oz😮😮

Of course but they still have some way to get them out. I just have never heard what. RC boats, catapults, trained albatross?

Jim

Im totally down to invent a bait a catapult with you:)

Thanks for all the great input guys. Keep it coming:)

I considered putting the breakaways on the list Chris. But theyre about $250 not including tax/shipping so they dont quite fit the "affordable" bracket, tried to keep it in the $100-$200 range including tax/shipping.  What the hell is gram!? This is 'murica!!!😜😝😜😝😜

I caught one before, but it was in the harbor not to far from the rocks. Surprised to see it from a sandy beach. Was there rocks/reef nearby? They are really freakin cool creatures to see alive in front of your face.

Yeah i know i gotta pay my dues. I still have a lot to learn, especially when it comes to the geography of my stompin grounds. Gotta figure out where the hot spots are, which areas regularly produce, which areas are comfortable and fishable, parking etc...  It doesn't help that my first real season on the sand is an "off" year. I'm tempted to go back to fishing the harbor for a bit just to remember what the clicker sounds like though:) I have had a lot of problems with the salad though... Is that normal for this time of year? Nothing is more frustrating then doing your homework, knowing the tides and surf and having scoped promising areas, spending time and money and then there is more salad than water.

Welcome to P-Soul Elay....
Well i think its a bit of a loaded question. Poke around the board and read the articles and threads. There's lots of good info on here. You probably want a rod that can throw 6-12oz or 6-10oz. As far as what lb test, i think it depends on your set-up. You want to have 300-400 yds of line minimum. I think the majority of guys targeting these beasts are using 65-80lb braid, some guys use a 40-50lb mono topshot and everyone uses a heavy shock leader of 80-100lb mono. Hope that helps.

But slooow in the VC! Been doing a lot of recon lately, decided it was time to soak some bait. The ol' lady and I headed out for a 6-10pm sesh. First AO was nice and calm but salad galore, so we quickly moved down the road a couple miles. 2nd AO was premium conditions. Low surf, no salad, no wind, absolutely beautiful out. Although our camp did get pummeled by a rogue wave! Caught a couple SNFG on the light gear to keep the skunk off but not even a nibble on the big stick.. Again.. Lol. Can't wait hear the clicker go and to get my first surf beast, nothin but SNFG from the surf so far for me...  Hopefully I'll find that honey hole and Lady Luck soon.
