Glad you found a few! Didn’t quite get to your 400th species but all those are pretty cool and unique.

get abrazx of however it is spelled great line

Got a spool of 12 per your suggestion a while back. I was a bit perturbed when it couldn’t hold a uni-uni leader connection for sh!t, popped 100% of the time while cinching the knot. Although I tie a different leader connection knot now I amn’t so sure of it. I think I still have like 170 yards of it laying around though if I ever sum up the balls to try again.

Bummer about….well literally almost everything in this post. Hope the fresh air was worth it at least.

Not much talent you have to get so many bites and land very few fish.

Put a stinger hook in the tail, that will fix those short biting SOBs.

I was pulling stingers a couple months ago and I got fed up with the short bass.

I was actually pretty stoked while watching all the short biters on the rod tip, knowing I was getting a ton of bite footage without having to take time to unhook fish. I was thinking about just running a teaser on the camera rod next time but would hate to see the playback of a trophy fish destroying the teaser. Still a toss up whether I do that or not.

Glad you're getting out Jeremy, the doc said it will be several weeks before I should attempt walking on the sand.  Thank God for our boat and piers

Glad you’re well enough now to fish at all! You will be on the sand in time for summer.

I think I have two other sickle hooks. Yes the 5/0s are heavy, but 1/0s were much thinner wire but siwash so different specs altogether I suppose. I will probably be glad to be using these when I hook a big striper or something.

At it again tonight, Jared in tow. Seeing Craig Ferguson at the OC Improv on Friday. Good tide but I think Craig is better.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Same Sh Different Day 5/15

Tide looked mediocre, but wanted to try c-rigging a fluke on a neap tide for halibut. Conditions were okay. Water was as sh!t stained as when I last saw it on Saturday inside. Wind in my face. Swell was little. Some kelp in the wash but bearable.

Started with a c-rig grub. New hooks arrived. Matzuo sickle baitholders in #6. Heavier gauge than I'm used to but sticky sharp and seem good quality. Isolating the one I used today in my tackle box to see if/when the finish corrodes from one trip. The sickle shape did seem to hold the grub in place a lot better.

Got a bite early. Slight nibble on the grub. Set the hook and whole rig gone, continuing from last week. Didn't get too worked up about it, but it's the nail in the coffin for at least my 10# spool of red label.

Kept it moving and wasn't getting bit on the grub. Tide was getting near peak so switched to the fluke. Within a few casts, I got a tentative bite as if I was fishing a perch grub. Gave it room, it took the room, missed the hook set. Brought it in and there was a little bite mark on the plastic inside the hook shank. Well, they like it. Don't know how I missed that fish though.

Every cast it felt like I was either catching onto kelp or dragging my hook through the sand. Maybe 15 casts in I felt like I hooked kelp and brought it in at a moderate pace. Got to the wash and a pancake lit up in the shallows and hopped off the fluke for a long distance release. Not the quality I was looking for but good sign!

Another 200 yards down the beach I walked by an older asian man with a Team Daiwa hat on. I was wearing my new Team Shimano vest. We made eye contact and wrestled each other to the ground. No no, I told him about the halibut, I wanted to ensure good diplomacy.

Checked my fluke hook after so many casts and found it had dulled out, presumably burying itself in the sand. It was a bass plastic worm hook, straight shank maybe 3/0. Switched to a 1/0 baitholder and the dragging feeling on the retrieve instantly went away.

No more bites. No more break offs! Retiring all the red label and using some 15 and 12 laying around, probably order some Shimano Mastiff 8# from work soon.

Woof. That sucks. Hope it’s enough time to find the next and hopefully better thing. Seems like this job has been a sh!t show start to finish.

Good luck on the muck trout.

Lol with the mariachi, that’s a nice thoughtful birthday.

Bummer about not being able to smell the trout smoking!

I hope you found a way to get one of your nicknames on that drink menu, psoul representing.

That looked like a solid goat at 1:50

I need a little whiteboard to ID the spots before I drop it in. Those sheeps got me excited but it might be one of two spots and I’m not sure. Also got excited to see shiner perch there instead of the usual blacksmith. It’s the little things.

Solid placing, kinda wacky with the 1st place drama for a spotty tournament, hopefully they clean that up next year. Those are some nice spotties.

Go ahead and open this up in a new tab...

Went out with Jared this morning with a plan to find rockfish then go shallow. Was supposed to be pristine conditions with basically no wind all day, but that was out the window from the start. 5-8 W in the morning is not conducive to drifts in 900', so gave up on that tack quickly. Then realized my oil pressure might be a bit low on the way out, so decided 300' was too far and stayed close to home inshore.

I got my underwater camera last week and was itching to use it. Dropped it on the 3 way rig at Izor's to start. Terribly sticky bottom but potentially great footage. Camera was essentially attached to 50# while sinker and lure were on 30# so hoped that would keep me out of trouble. First drops were tangles with so many weighted things swinging around, so had to cut down the leaders a bit and slow my drop to the bottom and retrieve back up.

We weren't getting bites at Izor's so we headed to a bunch of stones nearby, gradually going shallower. Was still slow but Jared broke skunk first with a small calico.

Then we got into a section where they seemed to be on. Started as a slow pick for Jared while I only got pecked, but eventually hooked up. From there it was doubles every couple minutes. Managed at least 20 between us before we felt we had abused the sandie population enough and left to get our asses kicked through the chop back to the harbor.

Footage turned out pretty good. The bottom structure was about what I expected. Thought there would be more fish around, but enough showed up on camera to keep it interesting. I will probably adjust the rig a bit in the future to avoid tangles, and hopefully get sunnier days with a little clearer water. Also hope to use it on particularly interesting marks and potentially confirm the presence of exotics when they do appear.

Oi. Hope you two recover nice and quick.

My sense of smell is apparently lacking....Alicia wants compliments for perfumes and food fragrances and I pretty much misidentify every "note". I stuck a marble up my nose when I was in elementary school so maybe all I can smell is that.

And happy birthday to your wife!!!
