Fishing Talk / Entering the yak world.
« on: November 16, 2018, 09:37:43 AM »
My day job has a long term service awards program. Lots of stuff, jewelry, yard stuff, tools, kitchen stuff, I don't need or want but then this.

9' foot yak for free. So it is on the way.

Should be good enough for lakes and light enough to carry to the beach. Thinking of using it as a cart to the beach then could yak out bait.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Need my head examined
« on: August 30, 2018, 08:41:43 PM »
Went to the soup kitchen to dump bait and try to score some panfish.

Weeds and nothing else not a nibble.

Grand total of all SK trips is one croaker.

If I set foot on that stretch of sand again slap me.

Saw a preview for Fridays episode of "In Search Of" on the history channels and it looks like they will have a segment on the carnivorous isopods that love Steve so much.

General Board / Death to DST!
« on: June 28, 2018, 07:14:03 PM »
OK it is a hair political but the governor signed a bill and in Nov a measure to stop the semi annual clock change madness will be on the ballot.

I can't wait!

My wife is insufferable for weeks after the change.

Turtles were thieving bait like there was no tomorrow. Stopped off to examine potential rabbit hunting areas and found boatloads of foxholes.

Border Patrol as is normal out there stops to see what I'm doing. Kinda nice since it was 106 and I'm stopped wandering in the desert.

Off to the fishing areas and right off the bat turtles peck the bait to death. Tried a drift rig which is a bit trickier to cast.

Moved to what is a normally productive canal and more turtle bites.

Ended up in the AAC far east and needed more weight due to the current but the rod was then too overloaded and when swinging for the fence there is this loss of tension near the top of the arc and then the line reconnects with the reel and causes an instant backlash and the weight breaks the line.

Tough night for one fish. Usually is gangbusters.

Fishing Talk / New compact bait carrier...

Gonna give this a test drive.

Could fit a whole trip worth of chunked bait or several frozen 2-3 bait macs. Wide enough to reach in through the opening with your whole hand.

Got catfish bait in the freezer for tomorrow and will give this a whirl. Supposedly holds ice 3 days so should keep bait fresh all night.
The IV bait is a bit of a struggle constantly opening the chest but this should fill that niche. Even using coolers loading bait in the morning for a night trip is a PITA on a work week.

Freshwater Shore Fishing Reports / Sacramento river skunk
« on: June 08, 2018, 12:37:54 PM »
On a business trip tried 3 evenings but nothing. Not many locations for access and they either closed at dusk or had massive homeless camps. Found a promising location at Knights Landing but too steep to try again. Sand on the hill makes it hazardous.

Few night crawlers stolen but other baits untouched.
