So I normally would fish the New Moon Lake Jennings trip, but there was a small window for the marine forecast to get out this weekend. I swear every weekend for the past 6 months down here has been a horrible or South wind, big swells and wind waves and/or rain. It never fails, so i had to jump on this opportunity instead.
I heard of Bluefin in close, so brought one troller just in case the seas let me make the run. Unfortunately, they (marine forecasters) were off by about 8-hours in their forecast and the wind was already blowing. I decided for Plan B and catch bass on the rock piles. It was tough to get a bite and I found the reason. Tuna crab floating everywhere! That and tons of mackerel and wiggles with eyes made all of the fish full. I finally found a pile with some willing fish.
Funny thing is I caught 16 bass here and every single one was a turd roller. No Calico. I move to a few deeper rock piles (by 10 feet) and found tons of fish, but they are all the protected ones until March, so they all went back. I was using the iron and plastics with a small squid strip and 15-20 assorted rockfish came over the rail and went swimming back home.
Gophers
Tile Fish
Browns
Well. it lightly to moderately drizzled on me all day
And one plastic eating Goat. Pretty one with eyeliner and all!
I stopped after I realized there were no bass here and set up the Bounce Ball looking for halibut. I covered miles and miles zig zagging in the right places and at 3 different main depths, but to no avail.
Finally the wind turned SE and picked up big time. I slow trolled my way to the inlet and called it quits. Tough day of fishing today, but it was not a bad way to start out 2019.
Happy Hunting everyone and until next tide!
