Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Sunset Mission Bay Magic Hour 1/23/16
« on: January 23, 2016, 07:22:22 PM »
Did my daddy chores today - baseball tournament and cleaned the garage - so decided to treat myself to a little evening bass run. I can't remember the last time I hit sunset targeting bass specifically since the long rods always seem to be packed.
But conditions looked just right. I used to really like fishing the transition just before a front come through as the bass go on the chew. Tonight did not disappoint.
Armed with only a 3/4oz lead head and black widow swim bait, got to the water around 5. Wind was howling inland, but the evening glassed off at the bay super nice.

The tide was moving fast and the big surge out front was also evident. You'd be standing on a hump of dry sand then suddenly the water would swarm almost ankle deep. Lots or current and swirls.

Made about 5 fan casts before getting my first solid hit. It's been a long time since I caught a spotty so I had a stupid grin on my face. SOLID ... maybe 14".

Kicked it back in and worked the same rhythm. Few minutes later had another good thump. This was a pig. 16"+  Haven't caught a spotty this big in a few years. I know I know - it's a guesstimate ... but it spanned about two "Shaka" signs so close enough

The bite wasn't 'wide open' ...but pretty steady. Maybe a short bite or hooked fish about every 10 casts or so. Definitely active fish!

small guy -

This was another one over 12" and one of 3 that flopped off the hook before the portrait. Fortunately this one fell into a tide hole that just filled in and couldn't escape. Tide moved out and beached him perfect for the photo :-)

There is a fish here. I promise. You just have to look closely.  :D

Final guy of the night. (flash turned on this time)

The bite slowed and felt my patience wearing as my retrieve became faster and faster.  ;D Figured that was the time to roll. Caught 8 fish - missed another half dozen or so short bites.

Fun sunset hour though. Home by 6:30 and poured a glass of THIS !

 :D :D 8) 8)

Fun changing things up a bit. Glad the fish cooperated.

Tight Lines guys!

Food & Recipe / Killer boneless skinless chicken breast method
« on: January 06, 2016, 08:04:08 PM »
I've always struggled with breast meat. So much so, that I mostly eat boneless, skinless thigh meat.

Made a New Year's resolution to eat better, and well, the breast meat it is!!! LOL

Tried a new cooking method from "The Joy of Cooking" and it came out AMAZING. Sooooo moist and tender, can't believe I haven't looked this up before. Maybe most of you cook it this way, but if not, give it a try.

- Pound the breast meat (1-4 halves) just a bit to even out the size. I didn't go nuts, just a little bit of tenderizing.
- soak in simple brine for 15 minutes. 4 tbl spoons salt / 4 cups water
- heat the pan and throw in some olive oil. Not a lot, just a drizzle to coat the surface of the pan.
- Pat breasts dry and add some oil to the meat. Rub and sprinkle seasoning. Any will do. I used onion powder, garlic powder, lowry season salt, and paprika.

Important to trust timing.
- Put meat in pan on med/high and cook with timer for 1 minute.
- Flip the breasts and drop heat to low. Cook with timer for 10 minutes covered (Don't open cover at all).
- After 10 min, turn the burner off completely and set timer for another 10 minutes **Do Not Open Cover**
Chicken will cook from the inside in own juices

Check temp - 165-170. Should be beautiful white meat breast and super juicy / tender. Finished with some lemon squeezed over.

Give it a try. Family just went nuts.

Enjoy

General Board / The Year of Funk 2015
« on: January 03, 2016, 07:08:44 PM »
So this is the first year I've been sick as crazy all year long. First a cough that wouldn't go away for 5 months, now a new virus that has attacked my senses.

Curious if anyone else has this since several of my friends (including myself) have been suffering, so it's going around.

Just a stuffy nose really (mine did turn to a sinus infection) but this particular bug takes away your sense of smell and taste. Bit of a cough, but no major "sickness" besides the stuffy nose.

Honestly, I haven't been able to smell or taste anything since the week before Thanksgiving and its driving me insane. Literally those senses are completely gone.

Getting better now day by day, but one of the strangest bugs I've had.

« on: November 12, 2015, 12:06:43 AM »
My son committed to ASU for baseball. He's also been playing for the Tampa Bay Rays Scout team and invited to workouts with the Cleveland Indians.

Pretty cool stuff. I just have my fingers crossed college will be paid for - especially there (out of state is 42K per year yikes!).

Some of you know Alika. He's now 6'2 170 ... little fugger grew up  >:(

« on: August 09, 2015, 07:13:20 PM »
WIDE EFFIN OPEN off OSIDE today

Too busy to even take pictures.

On water 6:30a no line at bait barge.

5 miles out found boats hooked up.

Threw baits - instant ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Limits for 2 by 9:30 great size fish 20-40lbs. Lost a dozen big'uns as well. Had a couple triples going. 25lb fluorocarbon got bit the most.

Heard on the radio solid wall of fish from Encinitas to San O. 5-10 miles out (don't overshoot the fish). A WALL OF BITING FISH!!!!

Paul went out on Saturday and it was exactly the same thing.

Go GET THEM NOW!

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / It's a big ocean 8/1/15
« on: August 02, 2015, 11:40:13 PM »
Got an invite to ride a 38' cabo Saturday. This boat was just sick. Completely rigged for the fish kill adventure.

Bait at 5'o dark outa O'side and on we go. Not 10 minutes out we centerline a buoy and prop it. Clunk clunk clunk the port engine sounds like sh!t.

Run it reverse, forward, reverse, forward and sounds like the funk is clear - wow. Thought the trip was over as soon as it begun. Engines sounded great the entire rest of the day, so figured some buoy parts were just caught up. Sorry O'Side ... LOL ....

On to fishing. Gray light had us searching for life. Found some ponies and trolled for nada. Later passed by a GIANT dorsal fin about 50yrds off. Had to be a large GW or Mako. Really big Jaws like fin!!!

Found a paddy around 730 and picked up a 25-30lb YFT first cast. Nice fish and had them boiling around the boat. Couldn't get another to go, and the life sunk out so we moved on. (FIRST CAST CURSE)

Short story- ran down the 15 mile line, then out to the 182, then back up to the 181. Stopped on some 20-30 paddys along the way ... every 500 yards all the way up the line. Nothing home at all except a few small dorados here and there. I've never seen so many paddies to begin with ... but couldn't get the fish up. Saw marks EVERYWHERE. Chunked, threw live dines, threw flat falls, dropper loop, rubber core, even baited chunk on the drop, slow trolled around them dines, Halcos, feathers, cedar plugs .. nothing brought them up. Awe well.

Went fishing, caught little, but got to ride one of the sweatest boats i've been on yet. Thing friggen MOVED ...

Thanks Dale, thanks Paul, ....

We'll get em next time!

Camera died on my first pic of the day.

Buddy boated with Russian Hook and a few guys. Heard the fish were going off up in O'Side ... but the counts dropped night before we left.
Decided to run North 9 and out.

Got a good scoop of dines only to find out we lost 3/4 from bait pump issues when we were already out there. dumped fresh water into the tank and rewired on the fly. Got the pump working and salvaged 20 or so pieces. Enough for the day, but they were pretty beat up.

Found fish about 5 mile past the 9 busting everywhere on birds. Tried to get some on the slide but most would bail. Finally did some long soaks on paddies and scored a mix of BFT and YFT all 20-35lbs. 9 fish total between the two boats and we split the bounty so everyone went home with some killer slabs.

Back to the docks by noon. Killer day. Paul has the pics.

Feel the Pelagic flu coming on ... but I've already taken some 'real' sick days lately.

Felt good to bloody the boat!!

Get out there gang - fill them freezers!!

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / The trip that put me UNDER ...
« on: July 15, 2015, 01:59:27 PM »
Late Report:

Few weeks ago took our shot offshore at the YFT / BFT bite that's been really close to SD.

Been dealing with a cough on and off for a few months now, but was feeling great and ready to roll.

Grey at the bait barge in SD Bay. Can't get over how much I love being on the water during the wee hours of daylight.

Team RAMMER 2015 Fishing Tour in effect. Offshore season getting underway!!

Found the ponies early and took a ride. Trollers out for a while, threw some bait .. no one home though.

Finally found the birds and fish and put a handful of clones onboard.

Cough got worse ... Acute Bronchitis, now walking Pneumonia. Fun Fun!!!

Killing me seeing the great fishing still going off so close to home. Gotta heal up fast - August is going to be amazing!!

Hope y'all get sum this year! Poke was amazing!!!

Tight Lines!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Double with a 76" - 6/18/15
« on: June 19, 2015, 10:25:00 AM »
Thought I had a winner only to get home and see I'm still a second fiddle ...  :-[ :P ;D ;D

Paul and I ventured back to the same spot in three days. Eels on Tuesday, got a solo soup Wednesday, and conditions looked too damn nice so why not.

First shark came around 9pm. Good fight but on the smaller side.
Get it on the beach and she's gut hooked, hanging stomach out the mouth. Didn't want to mess around so took a quick pick and cut the wire. Taped to 66" ... hope she makes it.  :( :(

Second fish was the nice one. Hit around 10p and put up a pretty good fight.
Paul went to tail grab and could see he was having issues, but was too far away to get a good view.
Tail roped and dragged her up. Really nice size soup. Tripped when Paul called out 76" on the dot. New PB

Pictures never do justice but she was thick and heavy. Tried to pick her up for a shot - she wasn't down with that (neither was my back really)

Didn't get home till 12:30 Ugh ...
Talked about running offshore today ...
Will see if that happens ... LOL

details for the fish
6/18/15 - soup - 66" - female - Center chunk Mackerel - 1-2ft surf - incoming tide - crescent moon
6/18/15 - soup - 76" - female - Center chunk Mackerel - 1-2ft surf - incoming tide - crescent moon

Later guys!

Haunted by dreams of morays twisting, knotting, even biting through wire cable the night before, I had to get back out for a shot at redemption.

Got to the spot where I wanted to set up and swimmers didn't leave until almost 8pm.
As they were walking out I immediately start chumming the water with chunks of Mac. They ask what I was fishing for ...

... Sharks .... Big ones too ... :) :)
love messing with foreign tourists ...

Found myself at 9:00p in a hurry. Couldn't believe how quick that happened ... then 9:45 in a blink of an eye after that.

Without so much as a tap for nearly two hours, I stand up to gather my things and pack it in. Get a quick look at the phone and some texts when of course the rod goes off.

Took a nice first run, then another ... but was able to turn her head and found the right cranking pace to glide her all the way in.

Tried to haul it as high up the skinny as possible and that's when the hook popped.
Jumped in after it, still green, couldn't get the tail.
Finally grabbed, fell on my butt, wave turns her snout right at me ...
Freak out, jump up, grab tail again and land it.
She was snapping and croaking like crazy. I was flat out of breath.

Solo sucks ...

Pics

70" Female, Mac center cut, upper half of the incoming, surf 1-2

Have a lot of rigs needing a re-tie ...

Hope the bite stays hot!!

General Board / Long lasting cough ...
« on: June 14, 2015, 08:57:16 PM »
Ugh ... have a cough that won't go away. Both me and my 12yr old have been hacking since March after a baseball trip to AZ. We've taken him twice to doc for pics ... both times nothing shows / clear lungs. My turn tomorrow. Feel like I have Pneumonia or Stage # whatever of the bad stuff ... almost drowned last night in my own juice. Ugh ...

Fun times rant ...  >:(

Some of you know I give updates on my son's baseball gig ... so here goes ...

Played in the CIF Open Division Championship today (highest in SD and the equivalent of making a State playoff in those other 49 states :-) ...).

Anyway, Rancho Bernardo played La Costa Canyon and won 3-2 in extras. My boy Alika went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 1 run scored. He had 41 Hits on the season and batted .402 which puts him in top 10 ALL San Diego.

Made the Palomar 1st Team All-Conference selection, won player of the year honors at RB, and has good chance at the San Diego Div 1 All-Section team ....

Any baseball guys know what all this means ....  :P :P

I'm crazy high on life right now ... after watching this win ... and I guess a couple Vodkas too ... but Damn I'm so proud. Totally surreal ... Can't explain.

Happy fishing folks. Thanks for reading this.

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Tuna Everywhere ... 6/5/15
« on: June 05, 2015, 10:28:54 PM »
We've been watching wetsand.com and the computer models had the wind and swell laying down a bit today (Friday) so took a chance offshore for the BFT.  4am departure and the winds were almost nonexistent, even blowing off-shore. Got a full scoop of super-healthy dines at SD Bay and headed out. Sunrise had the breeze starting to pick up ... but the swell wasn't bad. Team Baja boat cuts right through it.

Made our way to the North 9 and saw signs of life, but the water was green and 62. Squall line moved through and actually got some rain with the winds picking up to 10kt and swell to 4ft. Decided to run for the sunlight on the horizon and were the first boat on the spot between N9 and the 182. Freaking birds and crashing fish ... EVERYWHERE ...

We ran and threw and trolled and ran and threw and ran and trolled and ran ... Every time you slid up on breaking fish they sank out and popped up 100yrds away. Frustrating day for sure!! We even had 80+ Pounders roll so close you could hand toss a bait right in the middle ... and nothing. Not a peck.

I have never seen fish crash the surface ... all day long ... in such a huge zone ... and everyone on the radio saying WTF???? Lock Jaw... what a trip....

Anyway - guess this was more of a rant. 80 or so miles on the water today. 65 and blue water out at the 182. Green water at about 16miles and in. Didn't hear of a single fish (tuna or YT) caught all day long. Paddies empty.

Good luck out there. Can't believe how unreal it was for nada!

Aloha
